Welcome to Charity Gaming
"Charitable Gaming" refers to lottery events permitted by a licence under the
Gaming Control Act (Ontario). A lottery exists if money is paid for a chance to win a
prize.
The City of Mississauga's Charity Gaming office issues licences for bingos, raffles (with
total prize value less than $50,000), break open ticket sales (within Mississauga), and
bazaars, to eligible charitable or not-for-profit organizations which have been in business for
more than one year and have shown that they provide a benefit to the Mississauga community.
Licensed organizations must conduct and manage their events in accordance with licensing
policies, terms and conditions and must fulfill all prescribed reporting and spending
requirements.
Eligible organizations must have charitable purposes and objects that fall within one of
these 4 classifications:
- other charitable purposes beneficial to the community ie:
- culture and arts
- health and welfare
- amateur sports organizations
- the enhancement of youth
- public safety programs
- community service organizations
Each type of licensed lottery is governed by a specific set of rules knows as Terms and
Conditions. These terms and conditions provide detailed instructions for the conduct and
management of licensed lottery events.
Lottery proceeds must be used for the direct delivery of eligible charitable programs and
services which are approved by the licensing authority.
Since raising funds through gaming contains a certain element of risk on the part of the
charitable organization, lotteries should be viewed as a supplement to the organization's other
fundraising ventures.
