Vehicle Licensing - The Public Advisory Committee (PVAC)

The PVAC was established in 1974 under the name of the Mississauga Taxicab Authority. The objectives of the PVAC include:

  • To insure the provision of a safe, efficient and orderly taxi service for the residents of the City of Mississauga at the most reasonable cost.
  • To protect the rights of the Public, the taxi industry and The Corporation of the City of Mississauga.
  • To ensure stability and security to the members of the taxi industry in the City of Mississauga.

The PVAC deals with a wide variety of issues of concern to the Taxicab and Limousine Industry. Currently the PVAC is dealing with a number of issues:

Operator Safety - Through the evaluation of equipment available to enhance driver safety, exploring training opportunities and monitoring the frequency and severity of crime within the industry the PVAC hopes to promote the safety of those involved in this industry.

Accessible Taxicabs - (vehicles that are specially equipped to meet the needs of individuals with restricted mobility).  The PVAC attempts to insure the highest level of service to the special needs community through the monitoring of demand and the evaluation of applications for accessible licences.

Standards - The PVAC also reviews and provides input on the establishment of standards for the Taxi Industry including such issues as limitations upon age of vehicles in use, inspection requirements and maintenance criteria.

Meter Rate - The Advisory Committee also provides recommendations to City Council regarding the meter rate that is charged by vehicles for hire. This rate is established based on such information as cost increases of vehicles and fuel, taxicab demand.

The membership of the PVAC is comprised of:

  • Three members of City Council
  • Two members selected from the General Public
  • Eight members from the taxicab and limousine industry
