Ward 1 Councillor Vacancy – Appointment Process

The deadline to submit nominations for the Ward 1 Councillor Position has passed. Council will vote on the appointment on February 21, 2018.

Appointment Process

The appointment process will be as follows:

  • Nomination Forms and supporting documents will be included on the February 21, 2018 Council Agenda for Council’s Review;
  • at the Council meeting, nominees will address Council for no more than 5 minutes in support of their nomination;
  • Nominees will be listed to speak in alphabetical order by last name;
  • Council will convene in Closed Session to deliberate the appointment;
  • Council will vote on the appointment in Open Session;
  • after the vote, Council will enact a by-law confirming the appointment of the successful candidate for the remainder of the term of the present Council.

Timeline

  • January 24, 2018
    • Vacancy is declared
  • January 24, 2018
    • Council votes to appoint an individual to fill the vacancy
  • January 29, 2018 – February 9, 2018
    • Nomination Forms and supporting documentation are accepted in the Office of the City Clerk (Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm)
    • Nominations will not be accepted after 4:30 pm on February 9, 2018.
  • February 16, 2018
    • Council Agenda is made available online including all Nomination Forms and supporting documentation provided by Nominees
  • February 21, 2018
    At its Council meeting Council will:
    • consider the applications
    • give candidates the opportunity to address Council in support of their nomination
    • make a decision regarding the appointment to fill the Ward 1 vacancy
    • pass the by-law appointing a candidate to fill the vacancy
