Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)

Why do we face a 5.9% increase when for years we’ve enjoyed no tax increase?
Answer
The 5.9% increase on the City’s portion of your tax bill is a last resort measure - the minimum needed to preserve services and service levels.

Over the last few years, all municipalities have been facing tremendous pressure on their budgets including downloading of service responsibilities from senior government without the necessary funding, declining Federal & Provincial grants and rising costs and the need to repair/maintain ageing infrastructure. In response to these pressures many municipalities began to implement substantial tax increases in the late 1990’s. Mississauga was able to manage without tax increases until recent years. However, in 2006 we were faced with pressures which would have resulted in a 12% tax increase to provide current services to existing communities and new residents.

1. Cost Increases in areas such as our street snow clearing contracts, fuel for our buses and other vehicles, insurance costs and hydro charges

2. Expansion of services to meet the needs of new growth, including the full-year operation of new facilities such as the Churchill Meadows Library which opens in 2007, and additional Fire staffing / crews.

3. The largest pressure faced is rising labour costs which amount to 69% of the overall 2006 budget.
