City of Mississauga's Community Development Co-ordinator Russ Pooley was awarded the
Newcomer Champion Award from the Ontario Honours and Awards Secretariat on behalf of the
Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration. Russ provides valuable support to numerous
ethnic groups and individuals across Mississauga and is very involved with Carassauga, the
Malton Festival, Sash Begat Festival, the Can-Sikh Festival and many more.
The Ontario Newcomer Champion Award recognizes individuals and groups who have made a
difference in their community and province through active citizenship and engagement. Award
recipients are champions of voluntarism, proud supporters of newcomers, and advocates of
greater social and civic inclusion.
