New City Bylaw Makes Mississauga Celebration Square Smoke-Free

May 13, 2014

On April 23 Mississauga’s City Council approved a new bylaw making Mississauga Celebration Square a smoke-free space. Effective May 17, the bylaw prohibits smoking tobacco-based products such as cigarettes, cigars, cigarillos and the use of tobacco in water pipes anywhere on Mississauga Celebration Square including the amphitheater, stage and fountain (map). The City enacted the bylaw in an effort to promote a healthier, environment for the community, and reduce the harmful effects of second hand smoke, especially for children.

“One of our top commitments at the City of Mississauga is to preserve the health, safety and well-being of our residents,” said Paul Mitcham, Commissioner, Community Services Department. “This bylaw ensures that visitors, residents and families visiting the square are protected against harmful second-hand smoke. We have received a lot community support to make the square a smoke-free space which will enhance the experience for those who use it for outdoor recreation.”

Over the next few months, the City will be working to inform and educate the public about the bylaw changes.

“The square is a hub for outdoor events and activities in the City’s downtown core, added Mitcham. Hundreds of Mississauga residents access the space daily with thousands more attending outdoor events at the square annually including community festivals, concerts, movies, and fitness classes.”

The City’s new bylaw is in alignment with the Region of Peel’s outdoor smoking bylaw.
