Mississauga residents can now track their walking and cycling on a new online program called Active Switch - designed to encourage active ways of commuting.
“Mississauga is becoming more walkable and bike-friendly and this program supports a green culture,” said Jacquelyn Hayward Gulati, manager of the Active Transportation Office. “Active Switch encourages residents to walk and cycle for day-to-day trips within their community, instead of taking these trips by car."
The Active Switch program allows residents to
• set personal goals
• calculate calories burned
• reduce greenhouse gas emissions
• track the number of kilometres travelled from walking and cycling.
Hayward Gulati said the two-year program will allow individuals to contribute to Mississauga’s community-wide goal. Goals include logging 250,000 kilometers of walking and cycling and preventing 40,000 kilograms of greenhouse gas emissions from entering the environment.
Registrants will receive a welcome kit (while supplies last), be eligible to win monthly prizes and a grand prize for an e-bike. They will also learn about other cycling/walking events and initiatives in the City such as Community Rides and the Let Your Green Show - “Give Your Car a Break” campaign.
Register for Active Switch in June and be eligible for a contest through Let Your Green Show. To enter, visit letyourgreenshow.ca or facebook.com/letyourgreenshow.
The Active Switch community program is a partnership between the City of Mississauga and SustainMobility – the organization that delivers the Smart Commute program. It is funded through the Trillium Foundation. Learn more about Active Switch at activeswitch.ca/mississauga.
