Teddy Bears have been a traditional childhood toy for more than a century. The first Benares Teddy Bears’ Picnic was held in 1995. It was inspired by “Teddy”, a little stuffed bear given to Geoffrey Harris Sayers his first Christmas, in 1907. Geoffrey was the grandson of Mary and Arthur Harris of Benares Historic House. Geoffrey’s “Teddy” was loved by several generations of the family.

Now his fur is well worn and he has a lovely jacket hand-made for him by Mary Harris. He and Grampa Bear (dates to 1947) have their picnic tea party set up in the Sitting Room at Benares, ready to greet the people and bears who visit them at  the 20th Annual Benares Teddy Bears’ Picnic
