New Public Art Piece to be Unveiled at Mississauga Celebration Square

Mississauga Celebration Square is home to the City's newest public art installation entitled The Book by Ilan Sandler. The piece will be officially unveiled during a media photo opportunity on Tuesday, May 10.

The Book was formally acquired as part of the City's Public Art Collection in December 2014. The sculpture was originally commissioned by the Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA) and Hillside Media Communications, Ltd., with the intention of gifting it to the appropriate organization.

About The Book
The Book is a painted steel sculpture with two pages torn away from its spine. The spine is perpendicular to the ground, the cover is open and the pages appear to blow in the wind animating the space at Celebration Square and the nearby Central Library. The pages are patterned with clusters of words and symbols referencing the origins of writing and the human body. More information on the Public Art Program is available at

About the Artist
Sandler studied at the University of Toronto, where he received a B.Sc. in Physics, and at the Ontario College of Art and Design, where he completed an Honours Fine Arts certificate. In 2000, he was awarded a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia. He then went on to teach at the University of the Arts and Moore College of Art and Design in Philadelphia and most recently at the Nova Scotia College of Art & Design (NSCAD) where he held a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council Research/Creation Fellowship until 2011. He is currently running Sandler Studio Inc. in Halifax, Nova Scotia. More information on Ilan Sandler’s work is available at
