Iceland Arena`s Rink 1 to be Dedicated in Honour of Fran Rider

An official dedication ceremony honouring Fran Rider, long-time community activist and advocate for girl’s and women’s hockey, will take place at Iceland Arena. The Olympic-sized rink, Rink 1, will be dedicated in recognition of Ms. Rider’s tireless efforts to grow and further the sport of women’s hockey.

Fran Rider
The dedication ceremony will take place during the 2017 World Girls Hockey Weekend Long Game. This fun “long game” will see female players ages 10 and up playing on either Team White or Team Red from coast to coast. Games will start in Newfoundland and finish in British Columbia. The games for Ontario are being hosted by the Ontario Women’s Hockey Association (OWHA) at Mississauga’s Iceland Arena.
Ms. Rider has been involved with girls and women’s hockey as a player and advocate since the age of 16. Some of her crowning achievements include the development of the OWHA in 1975, bringing the first official women’s International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Championship to Ottawa and helping introduce women’s hockey at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan. Ms. Rider was inducted into Mississauga’s Legends Row in 2001 and in 2015 she was invested as a Member of the Order of Canada and inducted into the IIHF Hall Fame.
