Celebrate Seniors' Month with Activities to Keep Your Body and Mind Active

June is Seniors’ Month. Regardless of your age, there’s tons of different ways to keep your body and mind active. Here are some fun and beneficial activities you can try to maintain your physical and mental well-being.



1) Visit the Older Adult Expo

Experience the 2019 Older Adult Expo on Tuesday, June 4 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at South Common Community Centre. There will be over 70 exhibitors, activities, refreshments, try-it fitness demonstrations, device advice and other activities and demonstrations to enjoy. You can take the $1 MiWay senior fare to get there. For more information, visit mississauga.ca/olderadults.

2) Try a new sport or pick up a new hobby
Bocce ball? Lawn bowling? Tennis? Mississauga has it all. On a nice sunny day, grab a few friends to and head to the park to play a game. Visit a community centre or use eParks to find out which parks in Mississauga have the courts you’re looking for.

3) Library programs for older adults
Various libraries across Mississauga will be offering a social throughout June – good company, free refreshments and a variety of activities. For a list of participating libraries and time, see the May to June programming (page 11).

4) Try a fitness program
Sign up for a fitness or drop in program at your local community centre. You can try yoga, line dancing, basketball or drop in for a lane swim. Check out the Active+ guide to find out more about recreation activities in your community. As a summer fitness special, you can also buy a three-month membership and get one month free. You’ll also receive a free fitness assessment and personalized workout program. Offer is available until July 31, 2019.

5) Therapeutic programs

Dealing with chronic pain or do you just want to start moving and feel better? The City of Mississauga has more than 150 therapeutic land and water classes per week which provide effective gentle or low impact activities to start, maintain or improve overall fitness and health. A wellness membership is a great way to get started and have access to the Therapeutic programs that can improve your quality of life.

6) Take a walk in a park to birdwatch
You can stretch your legs and go for a walk at a nearby park. In Mississauga, you might be able to see and hear various bird species like blue jays, cardinals or woodpeckers. Take a look at eParks to find a park near you to visit.
