The City of Mississauga is named one of Canada’s Greenest Employers for 2014 as selected by the editors of Canada's Top 100 Employers.
“This is the first time we’ve received this particular recognition for our environmental work,” said Mayor Hazel McCallion. “It shows that the importance we are placing on making Mississauga a world-class, green city is being noticed, and we’re very proud of this recognition.”
According to Mediacorp Canada Inc., the publishing firm that manages Canada’s Top 100 Employers, the country-wide competition recognizes employers that lead the nation in creating a culture of environmental awareness in their organizations. The winners are recognized as Canada’s leaders in attracting people to their organizations because of their environmental initiatives.
“A total of 55 employers were selected from across Canada for this designation and we are proud to be one of them,” said Janice Baker, City Manager and CAO. “The best way to promote a green culture is to demonstrate it through our actions. It’s ingrained in the way we think, operate and conduct our business.”
“We’re committed to move this city towards a more sustainable future,” said Ward 11 Councillor George Carlson, chair of Mississauga’s Environmental Advisory Committee. “From managing in-house recycling and waste reduction programs to installing state-of-the-art pool heat recovery systems in our facilities; we’re on the right track.”
Selection of Canada’s Greenest Employers was based on a number of criteria:
• Unique environmental initiatives and programs
• Success in reducing the organization’s environmental footprint
• Employee engagement in environmental initiatives
• Environmental public identity of the organization and its ability to attract new employees
