The City of Mississauga is one of seven Canadian cities that has ranked first in transparent financial reporting in the Frontier Centre for Public Policy’s report Local Government Performance Index, 8th Edition.
The Centre’s Local Government Performance Index (LGPI) compared the 2013 financial data of 100 cities across Canada based on criteria that includes:
- providing a detailed breakdown of expenses
- referencing specific dollar amounts
- comparisons of previous years and
- justifications for any increased spending
The LGPI also considered the timeliness of the independent auditor’s report for each municipality.
“Council and staff strive to ensure the City’s financial reporting is transparent and accessible,” said Gary Kent, Commissioner, Corporate Services and Chief Financial Officer. “This recognition is testimony to the City’s commitment to keeping our citizens informed and engaged.”
Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, along with five Alberta cities: Edmonton, St. Albert, Calgary, Lethbridge and Medicine Hat also placed first nationally.
The Frontier Centre for Public Policy is a North American research and education charity founded in 1999 to help voters and policy makers improve their understanding of the economy and public policy.
