Contributions to mayoral and councillor candidates in Mississauga elections may now be eligible for a rebate. Mississauga City Council voted in favour of implementing a Municipal Election Campaign Contribution Rebate Program for the 2018 Municipal Election.
“Various municipalities in Ontario have implemented election campaign rebate programs,” said Mayor Bonnie Crombie. “The small cost of a campaign rebate program is a worthy investment if it will broaden the source of campaign funding and potentially increase voter and candidate participation.”
A rebate program enables a municipality to reimburse contributions made by individuals to the campaign of a candidate running for mayor or councillor. Application rules and procedures must be followed by the candidate and contributor in order for the City to pay a rebate.
Rebates of 25 per cent will be issue for financial contributions starting at $25, up to a maximum rebate of $150.
Further information, including rules and procedures, will be made available on Mississauga’s election website, mississaugavotes.ca in 2018.
