At approximately 7:30 a.m. on February 11, Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services responded to an explosion at a commercial plaza located at 3066 Hurontario Street near the intersection of Hurontario Street and Dundas Street.
The incident remains active and first responders including Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services, Peel Regional Police and Peel Emergency Medical Services are on the scene. The City of Toronto’s Heavy Urban Search and Rescue Team is also onsite and supporting first responders. The Office of the Fire Marshall and Peel Regional Police are investigating the cause of the explosion. Building Inspection staff are onsite inspecting the affected properties and it will not be safe for some individuals to re-enter their homes.
A reception centre has been set up for anyone directly affected by the incident at the Mississauga Valley Community Centre – Gymnasium Building, 1275 Mississauga Valley Boulevard. The reception centre will be open as required. The Region of Peel Human Services, supported by Red Cross and the City’s Office of Emergency Management are at the centre to assist residents and business owners affected by the incident. At this time, the exact number of displaced people is not yet known but 35 people have registered for support with Region of Peel Human Services. Donations are not needed at this time.
As a result of the explosion and ongoing efforts at the scene, Hurontario Street from Dundas Street to Hillcrest Avenue remains closed until further notice.
There continues to be heavy smoke in and around the area and residents and business owners are asked to keep their windows closed and to shelter in place. First responders at the scene are asking everyone to please avoid the area due to the ongoing incident.
As a precaution, the Cooksville Library is closed today and T L Kennedy Secondary School will be closed tomorrow.
