At yesterday's City Council meeting, the City of Mississauga presented the United Way of
Peel Region with a cheque for $187,895.14 - the total amount raised by City of Mississauga
employees during the 2007 United Way Employee Campaign.
"Our staff is dedicated to helping to improve the quality of life of Mississauga residents
through our fundraising campaign," said City Manager and CAO, Janice Baker, "Our
community is going to benefit from the commitment and generosity of our staff. The City of
Mississauga United Way Employee Campaign surpassed its $175,000 goal, making this years
donation the largest ever raised by City employees," added Baker.
The United Way of Peel Region Spirit Award was presented to the City of Mississauga for its
contribution to the Region of Peels 2007 fundraising campaign. The award for Outstanding
Public Sector Joint Union Management Campaign is given to an organization that best exemplifies
teamwork, leadership and involves both management and union employees.
"This is a great honour for the City of Mississauga," says Baker. "We are very
proud of this achievement."
In addition to the Citys non-union employees, union groups that contributed to the campaign
include: Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 66, International Association of Fire
Fighters Local 1212, International Association of Machinists District Lodge 78 and Amalgamated
Transit Union Local 1572.
"This award reflects the hard work and dedication of the City of Mississauga staff who
volunteer their time and effort to this campaign," says Gary Williams, City of Mississauga
Employee Campaign co-chair. "We have seen the difference we have made with the record
amount of funds we have raised in the last two years. It makes you very proud to be part of
it," added Jennifer Smith, City of Mississauga Employee Campaign co-chair.
The City of Mississauga has been involved in Peel Regions United Way fundraising for more than
a decade and has raised more than $1 million to date.
