Criteria support the stop hierarchy and provide a strategy for identifying different categories of stops. The principles and objectives in the design hierarchy are intended to:
• define and differentiate strategic locations and important points of interest along the corridor;
• support the ongoing transformation and evolution of the City including the range of strategic initiatives, visions, master plans, built form and key development projects that are related to the Hurontario corridor;
• assist transit users with orientation and navigation through way-finding supported by design excellence;
• support unified architectural design across the stops;
• strengthen the overall presentation of the LRT system as an important transportation system and feature within the Hurontario corridor that signifies mobility;
• promote connectivity between stops and the surrounding communities; and
• integrate with the overall public realm and contributes positively to the perception, image and experience of the City.
Metrolinx Procurement and Design Excellence Model
Metrolinx’s Design Excellence Division is responsible for generating “Design Excellence Principles and Requirements” for large transit projects. The principles and requirements are tied to the Project Specific Output Specification (PSOS) and provide strategic design guidance and direction to bidding teams.
The Hurontario Light Rail Transit Ad Hoc Council Working Group received presentations from Metrolinx on the Design Excellence approach with highlights provided on the Eglinton Crosstown and Finch LRT projects. Updates on municipal goals were also provided on stop design, a high quality public realm and public art that will be addressed through the Design Excellence process.
Design Excellence Workshop
On June 21, 2016, a workshop facilitated by Metrolinx was held with members of the Hurontario Light Rail Transit Ad Hoc Council Working Group
and City of Mississauga staff.
Objectives of the workshop were:
• to explore and identify design opportunities by looking at a broad range of LRT stop precedents from other cities, including approaches to integrated public art; and
• come to a common understanding in defining the priorities, principles and requirements for the HLRT that will be incorporated into the "Design Excellence Principles and Requirements" document that will form a part of the submission requirements for the Metrolinx Procurement/PSOS process.
