Our Future Mississauga–Be Part Of The Conversation/Directions For New Strategic Plan & Open House

Jun 12, 2008

At General Committee yesterday, staff presented a report entitled “Our Future Mississauga: Community Engagement and Directions” detailing the outcomes of the “Our Future Mississauga – Be Part of the Conversation” initiative. Staff also announced plans to hold an Open House on Tuesday, June 24, 2008, to launch the formal public input phase for the new Strategic Plan.

“The community’s ideas of ‘thinking big’ about the future of our city has transformed into strategies to shape the City’s future direction,” said Bruce Carr, director, Strategic Planning & Business Services. “As a result, today we have presented new directions for the Strategic Plan to position Mississauga as a world class city of the 21st century.”

According to the report, five Strategic Pillars for Change have been identified to give structure and direction to the new Strategic Plan. These pillars were further refined by stakeholders and staff based on community feedback:

1. Developing a transit oriented city
2. Ensuring youth, older adults and news immigrants thrive
3. Completing our neighbourhoods
4. Cultivating creative and innovative businesses
5. Living green

The report details the five phases of the “Our Future Mississauga – Be Part of the Conversation” initiative. The initiative, which was intended to involve the community in developing a new vision for the city, was the largest community engagement initiative in Mississauga’s history, connecting with almost 100,000 people since the campaign’s launch in June 2007.

A wide variety of stakeholders representing a broad spectrum of the community engaged in a “conversation” about the future of Mississauga. Ideas, suggestions and comments were collected through stakeholder interviews, community and staff meetings, Big Idea “puzzle pieces”, the website, speaker series, Rogers TV series and the visioning symposium.

“In the spirit of continuing to engage the community, the directions for the Strategic Plan will be presented to the public for review and comment at the Open House later this month,” added Carr.

The Our Future Mississauga Open House will take place in the Great Hall of the Civic Centre on Tuesday, June 24, 2008:

2 to 4 p.m. – presentation at 2 p.m.
6:30 to 9 p.m. – presentation at 7 p.m.
