Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services Team Wins USA National Extrication Championship

The City of Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services' Auto Extrication Team placed first overall at the 2008 USA National Extrication Championship held in Chili (Rochester), New York. The competition consisted of the top 25 teams from across the United States and the top five teams from Canada.

"We are fortunate to have such a high level of expertise in the Mississauga Fire & Emergency Service Division," said acting fire chief John McDougall.  "This achievement is a reflection of individual commitment to public safety, and many hours of extensive training and practice in preparation for daily emergencies."

The Mississauga team placed first in the overall competition receiving a first place finish in the Unlimited Pit Competition where there are no restrictions on the tools that can be used. Team captain, Mark McKechnie, won the Best Incident Commander Award, for providing excellent direction to his team and strong leadership ability.

The six-member auto extrication team consists of two coaches: captain John Mann and Dan Boyer;and firefighters Mark McKechnie, team captain: Ryan Gibbons; Ryan Kingston; Brett Tindall; Charlie Willis and captain Dino Bernardi.

"We are extremely proud of being recognized as the best emergency service in North America," said team coach and captain John Mann. "The skills we practice for these events are not just for show or performance at competitions, they are put to use during real-life emergency situations everyday."

Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services has been involved in national and international competitions with auto extrication scenarios and tools such as the jaws-of-life for more than 20 years, and has consistently placed in top categories.
