Multi-media Artist Sharmila Samant of India in Mississauga for Art Residency

Internationally-renowned artist Sharmila Samant will be undertaking a three week residency from July 26 to August 18, 2008 in Mississauga.   This residency is co-presented by SAVAC (South Asian Visual Arts Centre) and Centre A  (Vancouver International Centre for Contemporary Asian Art), in collaboration with the City of Mississauga Office of Arts and Culture, the Art Gallery of Mississauga, and the Central Library.

“As part of her artistic journey, Samant will explore migrant experiences of Mississauga's South Asian community in particular, the Goan and Maharashtran communities - and the recent phenomena of immigrant Indians returning to live in India,” said Zainub Verjee, Director, Office of Arts and Culture.

Samant is a multi-media artist and curator living and working in Mumbai, India. Her installations and videos deal with urban migration, globalization and consumer culture. Samant is the founding member of Open Circle, a Mumbai-based artist collective.  She has curated numerous exhibitions including the following recent works: South Asian video screening at KO Video, 1st Durban Video Festival, organized by Pulse, Durban, South Africa, 2005 and Destination Asia: Non-strict Correspondence curated by Quddus Mirza and Sharmila Samant, Sorus Foundation Almaty, Kazakhstan, 2007.
