Mississauga Recognized for Environmental Excellence

Nov 07, 2008

The City of Mississauga was recently recognized by the Mississauga Board of Trade (MBOT) with a 2008 Business Award of Excellence for its environmental initiatives and contribution to the well-being of Mississauga.

“The environmental programs we have put in place over the last few years, in addition to the great support we receive from Council and the Environmental Advisory Committee, have contributed significantly to the reduction of the City’s overall environmental footprint,” said John Lohuis, Chair, Mississauga’s Environmental Network Team. “Our Energy Management Program alone has saved the City $9.3 million over the last 6 years with an investment of $2.3 million, providing a return on investment of 408%.”

According to MBOT, the Environmental Excellence Award is presented to “organizations that demonstrate a significant proactive commitment to developing, implementing or modifying business processes so that the environment is better off because of their organization’s products, services or investments.”

To date, the City of Mississauga has many environmental initiatives, including:

  • The establishment of a Environmental Advisory Committee consisting of selected Councillors and members of the Community to offer advice and make recommendations to City Council on environmental initiatives and issues in order to promote environmental sustainability in Mississauga.
  • The development of an interdepartmental staff team to collaborate in the development of environmental best practices and recommendations on environmental issues.

  • The creation of Mississauga’s Anti-Idling Awareness Campaign, which successfully targeted unnecessary emissions from engine idling of City staff, fleet drivers and the public at GO Transit stations, schools and municipal facilities.

  • The Energy Management Program, which aims to identify energy and water saving opportunities that will lower utility costs, improve operational efficiency and contribute to the reduction of the City’s overall environmental footprint.
