At this week's Council meeting, City of Mississauga Community Services staff presented
conceptual designs for the revitalization of the City's downtown square.
"Great cities have great squares. We know the Civic Square is key to the development of
the City Centre and social infrastructure in Mississauga," said Community Services
commissioner Paul Mitcham. "It is a legacy project that will allow us to host events that
bring people together in Mississauga and further our goal of building a City for the 21st
century. We have consulted the public and have approximately $10 million budgeted for this
project; we have also requested additional funding from other levels of government."
Mitcham explained that this revitalization project was one of many infrastructure projects
submitted to the Federation of Canadian Municipalities' (FCM) for funding which could be
available as early as this spring.
"The Civic Square has the potential to develop into an outdoor community centre by
incorporating principles to make it people friendly," said senior project manager Randy
Jamieson. "The proposed design features connecting the Civic and Library squares into one
and upgrades to existing features that the community uses for cultural and special events. A
market area, stage, media wall and upgraded ice-rink and water feature will support large
events. The scope of the project and detailed design will depend on if and when, we receive
infrastructure funding from other levels of government to achieve the full vision for the
