Backgrounder - Highlights from the 2009-2010 City Business Plan and Budget

Highlights from the plan, which focuses on five key areas, include:

Transit/Relieving Congestion

  • implementing the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system along the 403 Highway
  • completing a Light Rapid Transit (LRT) and land use study for Hurontario Street
  • increasing Mississauga's transit service - Transit Ridership Growth Strategy
  • connecting sustainable modes of transportation - walking, cycling and transit facilities
  • relieving traffic congestion - Transportation Master Plan, traffic management centre upgrades
  • traffic signal communication improvements, improvements to snow clearing services


  • developing an environmental master plan
  • working with Smart Commute Mississauga
  • implementing the Waterfront Parks Strategy
  • adding new parkland
  • expanding the tree canopy
  • improving watershed management
  • continuing to green our vehicle fleets - increasing investment in hybrid buses and cars

Implementing Strategic Projects

  • completing the new Strategic Plan
  • revitalizing Mississauga's downtown core with the development of new parkland
  • developing a sustainable plan for Arts and Culture
  • completing the City's Official Plan Review
  • revising our Economic Development Strategy
  • construction of the new Garry W. Morden Fire Training and Mechanical Centre
  • implementing a new downtown parking strategy


  • continuing to invest in the repair and upgrade of existing roads, bridges and infrastructure
  • library branch renovations
  • community centre renovations

Managing the Tax Rate

  • incorporating internal budget savings and reduction measures to lower the impact on City property taxes (approximately $12 million in 2009)
  • continuing to place emphasis on excellence in service delivery through internal economy, efficiency and effectiveness reviews for 18 services and programs
  • continuing and improving internal programs that harness employee ideas regarding business streamlining and service delivery efficiencies
  • continuing internal audits on financial controls
