Jul 09, 2010

The City of Mississauga was recently named one of Canada's Top Employers for Young People for 2010 as selected by the editors of Canada's Top 100 Employers.

"Young people are our future and I am proud that the City of Mississauga was selected as one of the leading national employers for young people," said Mayor McCallion. "In May, I challenged our local businesses to hire two additional summer students. It is important for our young people to know they are valued and that they play an important role in our workforce."

According to Mediacorp Canada Inc., the publishing firm that manages Canada's Top 100 Employers, the country-wide competition recognizes employers that lead the nation in offering exceptional workplaces and human resource programs of interest to young people starting their careers. The winners are deemed to be Canada's leaders in attracting and retaining younger employees to their organizations.

"We work hard to be an employer of choice," said Janice Baker, City Manager and CAO. "Our entry level positions allow young people to enter the workforce, learn and receive support from some of the best employees in their field."

Selection of the Top Employers for Young People was based on a number of criteria including workforce demographics, opportunities for education and development as well as entry level openings.

"A total of 50 employers were selected from across Canada," said Sharon Willock, director of Human Resources. "Each had one key initiative highlighted and the City of Mississauga was recognized for its mentorship program. In addition, we also have tuition assistance, co-op programs and extensive training and career development opportunities."

As Canada's sixth largest city, Mississauga is home to 730,000 residents and 55,000 businesses, including 61 Fortune 500 companies with Canadian head offices or major divisional head offices. A diverse, progressive and award-winning municipality located on the shores of Lake Ontario in the heart of the Greater Toronto Area, Mississauga is one of Greater Toronto's Top 90 Employers for 2010. Enhancing its citizensÂ’ quality of life by providing superior services, revitalizing its infrastructure and conserving the environment, Mississauga is committed to innovation, operational excellence and fiscal responsibility which is reflected in its motto: "Leading Today for Tomorrow."
