Mississauga Youth Get Active With Help From The Pepsi Foundation

Aug 23, 2010

More than 550 Mississauga youth have registered in recreation programs across the city so far this year thanks to the Jerry Love Children’s Fund and corporate donations that include The Pepsi Foundation’s $25,000 contribution.

“The City values our partnership with The Pepsi Foundation and this donation will give a boost to our recreation programming,” said Recreation and Parks Director John Lohuis. “The Pepsi Foundation’s support will make activities more affordable to youth, which is a goal of the City’s strategic plan, helping residents thrive in our community.  This contribution will get more youth involved, while encouraging the start of a healthy and active lifestyle.  Initiatives like this will ultimately result in a healthier population down the road.”

The Pepsi Foundation is the largest donor to the Jerry Love Children’s Fund.  The City saw an increase of 106 youth registered in recreation programs over the past year.  “Thanks to The Pepsi Foundation’s donation, youth whose families would not have been able to afford summer programming will be given the opportunity to take part in swimming, skating and other activities,” said Lohuis.

“This is the second year that we have supported the Jerry Love Children’s Fund,” said Pepsi Foundation President Denis Sacks.  “We are committed to supporting causes that provide positive opportunities in the community.  Seeing the difference our contribution made in 2009 and the increase in the number of registrants made it a clear choice for us again this year.”

Administered by Mississauga Recreation & Parks, the Jerry Love Children’s Fund raises thousands of dollars each year to help hundreds of youth enjoy the benefits of participating in recreation programs. Since 1985, the Fund has provided assistance to more than 11,000 youth through fundraising and donations totalling $1.1 million.  In 2009, the fund placed 450 youth in programs.  For more information, to donate or to register, visit
