City of Mississauga's Draft Code of Conduct Adopted in Principle - Public Review Period Extended

At today's meeting of General Committee, the draft Code of Conduct for the Mayor and Members of Council and appointment of an Integrity Commissioner was adopted in principle with further requirements related to implementation and an extension for public input.

"The public will have until September 22 to make further comments on the draft code and appointment of an Integrity Commissioner. The Council appointed committee will review all comments received and a further report will be presented for the September 29 meeting of Council to be ratified," said City Solicitor Mary Ellen Bench.

Bench explained the report and Code, authorized by the Municipal Act, 2001 outline various elements found in council codes of conduct from other Ontario cities.

The draft was circulated for public comment to ratepayer groups, BIAs and was posted on the City's website from July 9 to August 18, 2010. The draft Code was developed by a committee of Council with Ward 5 Councillor Eve Adams, Ward 8 Councillor Katie Mahoney and Ward 11 George Carlson and staff support from the City Manager and CAO, City Solicitor and City Clerk.
