"Older Adults In The Know" -- the City of Mississauga's new website -- will
provide older adults, their family and caregivers with links to the resources, information and
services that will help them remain active and engaged in the community.
"The City of Mississauga's Older Adult Plan, approved by Council in 2008, recommends
improving access to community resources that are essential to personal health, community and
neighbourhood development, and to the overall quality of life of our older adult
residents," said Recreation and Parks Director John Lohuis. "Today's launch of this
new website builds on the City's strategic goal of ensuring older adults thrive in our
community. It supports their individual needs, and encourages active living and lifelong
learning so that our older adult community can continue to enjoy living healthy and engaged
lives in Mississauga."
Lohuis explained that the website links to government offices, agencies, service providers and
resources available in Mississauga and in the surrounding region which are categorized in the
following service areas: active aging, health, transportation, support and safety, housing and
Statistics in the City's Older Adult Plan identified that Mississauga's older adult population
(55 years and older) will increase from 20 to 38 per cent in the next 20 years.
"Mississauga's older adult population is growing, and this segment of our community is
becoming more involved and active," added Mississauga Older Adult Co-ordinator Jayne
Culbert. "We anticipate that our older residents' needs and expectations for more
convenient ways to find community resources will also increase, including the ability to access
them via the Internet."
