Transit Ridership Grows by 6.1 per cent in Mississauga

Feb 28, 2011

MiWay, the City of Mississauga's new brand for transit, has achieved a 6.1 per cent increase in ridership above 2009 numbers in its first quarter.

"Since the inception of MiWay, in the first full week in October 2010 to the last full week in December 2010, the revenue ridership results are 6.1 per cent above the same period in 2009, and 3.5 per cent above 2008 – the year in which the organization saw its previous highest annual ridership," said Geoff Marinoff, director of Transit. "This growth has resulted in revenue rides per service hour – a key performance indicator in the transit industry – to increase 3.1 per cent over 2009."

Marinoff explained the City recorded its highest weekly ridership ever in Mississauga, with over 1,055,000 passenger boardings in the first week, following the October 4, 2010 introduction of 42 new blue MiExpress buses to serve passengers traveling on the system's express route network. The introduction of the MiWay brand and new modern-styled, MiExpress buses represent two recent investments in improving the travel experience for customers.

Other investments include:

• 30,000 additional annual transit service hours in 2011 to improve service reliability across the system and manage challenges arising from overcrowding.

• On Oct. 4, 2010, 15 new hybrid, orange MiLocal 40-foot buses began serving passengers on Route 19-Hurontario – the transit system’s most popular route.

• Automated next stop announcement technology will be introduced on all routes by summer 2011.

• Customers can tap onto MiWay with a PRESTO smartcard to pay their transit fares on three bus routes that travel to/from local GO Train stations. The PRESTO smartcard will be accepted on all routes by summer 2011.

• New modern on-street signage has been installed at MiExpress bus stops to help customers more easily identify and access the service.

• An improved website, and a new mobile site

• Construction has commenced on the Mississauga Bus Rapid Project to be operational in 2013.
