Mississauga's City Committees of Council Under Review

The City of Mississauga's Committees of Council structure is under review as directed by Council to ensure it is efficient, effective and aligned with the City’s Strategic Plan and resources. Currently there are 23 Committees of Council.

"In 2011, Council directed staff to report on the City Committees of Council Structure to review the mandate and structure of existing committees and make recommendations for Council approval," said City manager and CAO Janice Baker. "The review indicated that many of the committees required no changes and some needed to be redefined to ensure mandates and objectives were better aligned with the City of Mississauga's priorities to meet the needs of residents."

City staff reported on the review through the City's Governance Committee. As part of the review, eleven municipalities were benchmarked regarding their governance and committee structures including: Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Regina, Winnipeg, London, Kitchener, Hamilton, Brampton, Ottawa and Halifax. Council members, citizen members and staff directly involved in the support and functioning of the Committees of Council were also surveyed to assess the effectiveness of the committee structure.

A number of efficiency and effectiveness recommendations will be considered by Council including the creation of a committee specifically focussed on transportation and transit issues. Transportation and transit are two of the top priorities of the City at this time and a committee dedicated to these discussions will allow for more strategic attention and discussion of these matters. To accommodate this new committee it is recommended that the Council committee meeting calendar change from a two-week cycle to a three-week cycle.

The last significant review of the Committees of Council occurred in 1993. The report on City Committees of Council Structure Review is to be tabled at the General Committee meeting on April 3, 2013. Once formal approval has been given, most of the recommended changes would be implemented at the start of the next term of Council beginning December 2014.
