Streetscape Mississauga To Give Green Thumbs Up in Annual Garden Contest

May 08, 2013

Streetscape Mississauga, in partnership with the City of Mississauga and local horticultural societies, launches its annual citywide Glorious Gardens Contest by introducing two new prizes – “Garden of the Year” and “Best Display of Colour.”

“Streetscape Mississauga is a great program that continues to encourage residents and small businesses to show their community pride,” said Howie Dayton, Director of Recreation for the City of Mississauga. “Gardening does more than beautify our neighbourhoods. It’s an enjoyable and rewarding pastime that helps keep participants of all ages healthy, active and engaged in their surroundings, workplace and community. ”

The new “Garden of the Year” award recognizes the year’s best overall garden and will be chosen from all first place winners. The “Best Display of Colour” award is designed to appeal to new gardeners and those who love to surround themselves with a rainbow of colours. The winner will be selected from all non-winning entries.

"We are delighted again to be offering these two new contest features this year, and we’re hoping for a record-breaking number of entries,” added Streetscape Co-Chair Maureen Ricker. "Streetscape is a contest for everyone as it highlights the importance of greening and beautifying our personal surroundings and our community.”

Residential Contest Entry Period – May 13 to June 16, 2013
The contest is open to all Mississauga residents and is limited to front gardens. Gardens will be judged by volunteers from local horticultural societies, and will be evaluated on visual appeal, overall design, general maintenance and originality. Judging will start July 2, 2013 and continue to the end of July. Prizes will be awarded to the top three gardens in each class.

Small Business Contest Entry Period – May 31 to July 7, 2013
The contest is open to all small businesses in Mississauga with 25 employees or fewer. Final judging of the best five displays in each class will be done on site in late July.

Background
Streetscape Mississauga was established as a working partnership between the City of Mississauga and the city's four horticultural societies. It was introduced in 2009 as a component of Mississauga In Bloom and is now an independent program. Created and delivered entirely by volunteers with City staff support, the contest has been an unqualified success with new classes and new features added each year.
