Happy Birthday Car Sharing! Celebrate One Year of Sharing Rides

May 15, 2013

At today’s General Committee meeting, the Transportation and Works Department announced that the first year of its Car Share Service Pilot Project has resulted in hundreds of trips taken by members.

“The results of the first year of the Car Share Service Pilot Project in the City of Mississauga are encouraging,” said Martin Powell, commissioner, Transportation and Works Department. “The AutoShare service gives people living, working or going to school in Downtown Mississauga the opportunity to choose a green way to move.

Year One by the Numbers

  • 43,468: number of total combined kilometers driven by all car share users.
  • 616: number of trips taken using the car share service by Mississauga community members.
  • Three: number of cars in the AutoShare Mississauga fleet. This includes a third vehicle (Toyota Camry Hybrid) added to the fleet in April 2013 at no additional cost to the City.
  • 16: number of City of Mississauga internal divisions that have used the car share service.
  • 269: number of trips taken using the car share service by 40 City of Mississauga employees.

“AutoShare is very pleased with the growth and success of the project in Mississauga,” said Kevin McLaughlin, president, AutoShare Inc. “It is clear that car sharing has a long term future in Mississauga for businesses, individuals and the City, supporting the move toward public transit and sustainable transportation.”

The car share service, introduced in April 2012 and provided by AutoShare Inc., allows registered members to book a vehicle, unlock it with a membership smart card and later return the vehicle to the same parking space.

The pilot project aligns with the strategic pillars for change, goals and actions put forth in the City of Mississauga’s Strategic Plan. The car share service helps to develop a transit oriented city, implement a parking strategy that supports public transit and provide a variety of mobility choices.
