Students Take Innovative Approach to Encourage Transit Use

May 22, 2013

Two Mississauga secondary school students raised the bar this year in their efforts to promote transit to their fellow classmates through the City’s MiWay Student Ambassador Program.

"This year's winners of the MiWay Student Ambassador Program are Scott Hladun and Devika Matkar of Stephen Lewis Secondary School," said Geoff Marinoff, director of Transit. "Their interactive use of a flash mob was an innovative way to inform students about MiWay."

Now in its third year, MiWay's Student Ambassador Program expanded to 19 participating schools, from 15 last year. Marinoff hopes the program will continue to grow and encourages secondary schools to take part in the upcoming school year.

As part of the program, students had to host and design three information tables on trip planning, ticket agents and PRESTO – a GTA-wide, electronic fare card for public transit. They were also required to use different strategies to attract students to their activities. Scott and Devika used cardboard buses to create a 3D brochure stand, developed a student pledge, posters, and flash mob in the school’s hallway that attracted students to participate in a dance.

Scott and Devika, both in Grade 11, will each receive free transit for one year, an iPad, and their school will receive 100 free student tickets.
