New MiWay Accessible Buses Hit the Streets

Nov 07, 2011

The City of Mississauga's MiWay Transit added 43 new fuel efficient and fully accessible buses on the roads this month to serve customers on local MiWay routes.

"The new MiLocal orange buses are fully accessible and feature modern customer amenities that support our customer-service focus," said Geoff Marinoff, director of Transit. "Our new fuel efficient buses allow us to move closer to the City's strategic direction of developing a transit-oriented city that is environmentally responsible."

All 43 new buses are expected to be in service by mid-November and replace the last of the 15-year-old high-floor buses in the City's transit fleet.

The new buses feature:

• larger windows, new fabric seating and LED lighting
• a front entrance ramp to accommodate customers with wheelchairs and scooters to more easily
board and access designated priority seating
• single seats, rather than double seats, on the driver's side of the bus to help improve the
boarding process by expanding the aisle width in the lower area of the bus
• automated next stop announcement technology, which is now installed on all MiWay buses, to
help passengers of all ages and abilities
• PRESTO card readers to offer a wider range of service to our customers by allowing them to pay
fares using the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) -wide electronic fare card
• video/audio surveillance systems to enhance passenger safety and security while protecting
    rights to privacy
• lighter weight bus, contributing to more efficient use of fuel

"These 43 new buses are a huge step in achieving a more accessible city that addresses the needs of our growing population of older adults and persons with disabilities," said Diana Simpson, accessibility co-ordinator.
