Mississauga to Participate in Charitable Bingo and Gaming Revitalization Initiative

Apr 25, 2012

At its meeting today, Mississauga City Council enacted a bylaw to participate in the Charitable Bingo and Gaming Revitalization Initiative supported by the Ontario Lottery Gaming Corporation (OLG), Ontario Charitable Gaming Association and the Commercial Gaming Association Ontario.

"This revitalization initiative will give Mississauga gaming associations and related charities the opportunity to use new technology such as electronic bingo and continue the charitable work they do in our community," said Mayor Hazel McCallion. "It is about giving local organizations the ability to grow in a declining market."

The stated goal of the OLG revitalization initiative is to "create a new entertainment experience in charitable bingo gaming centres to both retain current players and reach out to new players for the overall benefit of generating revenues for charities to support the local funding model." For more information on the Charitable Bingo and Gaming Revitalization Initiative, visit the OLG website.

"Staff consulted with local charitable gaming centres to understand the issues and presented Council with options and information for consideration," said director of Enforcement, Mickey Frost. "If the City did not participate in the initiative there is the risk of charitable associations not being able to continue the current level of service to Mississauga residents if their revenues declined."

As Canada's sixth largest city, Mississauga is home to 738,000 residents and 55,000 businesses, including 63 Fortune 500 companies with Canadian head offices or major divisional head offices. A diverse, progressive and award-winning municipality located on the shores of Lake Ontario in the heart of the Greater Toronto Area, Mississauga is "Leading Today for Tomorrow" by focussing on delivering services, implementing its Strategic Plan, delivering value for money and maintaining infrastructure.
