TEMPORARY ROAD CLOSURE - Main Street from Queen Street to Church Street

Jun 27, 2013

Main Street will be temporarily closed from Queen Street South to Church Streets to construct “Streetsville Village Square.”

When:
Thursday, July 4 to Friday, November 8, 2013.

Where:
Main Street will be the main access to the construction site for construction vehicles and heavy equipment. Hoarding will surround the construction site. Workers and equipment will access the site at either side.

Who:
Although through traffic will not be permitted on Main Street between Queen Street South and Church Street, pedestrians will have access at all times. However, the temporary closure will remove on-street parking on Main Street.

Main Street businesses will remain open and residents will be able to access their properties. Other parking arrangements will be made for residents who currently use private driveways on Main Street.
What:
Closing the road is necessary to complete the “Streetsville Village Square” project.

Background:
The federal government has committed $990,000 toward redeveloping Streetsville Village Square (Streetsville Main Street Square) through its Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF). The purpose of the fund is to encourage economic benefits and help improve local facilities through better energy efficiency and accessibility.

Streetsville Village Square redevelopment will create an outdoor space and urban destination that also complements the community’s heritage and village history. According to design plans, the cenotaph will be centred in the new square and include energy efficient light and sound systems and accessible features to create a community focal point for local festivals, events and celebrations.

The public square is the place that connects residents and community through arts, culture and heritage. Redeveloping Streetsville Village Square is an opportunity to improve the quality and function of this outdoor space and, with this investment, transform it into a vibrant place and main public gathering space.

Community engagement began in September 2012 and ideas gathered during the public engagement meetings have been incorporated into its design.

Through its Strategic Plan and the Community Services “Future Directions” plan for recreation, the City of Mississauga is committed to reviewing its programs and services as well as building and maintaining facilities to meet the changing needs of our community.
