Greening Mississauga: From the Rooftops to the Streets

Sep 18, 2013

Mississauga City Council gave the green thumbs up to the construction of rooftop solar projects in Mississauga at today’s Council meeting.

“Delivering on the City’s green vision requires continuous support at all levels,” said Brenda Osborne, director, Environment. “Reducing Mississauga’s environmental impact through the installation of solar panels in Mississauga represents our ongoing commitment to putting the City’s environmental master plan into action.”

Rooftop Solar Projects in Mississauga – The Facts:
• Today City Council passed a new resolution to support the ongoing construction and operation of rooftop solar projects in Mississauga.
• On July 3, 2013, the Ontario Power Authority (OPA) offered 27 new Small Feed-in Tariff (FIT) renewable energy contracts in Mississauga, all for rooftop solar projects.
• Once built, the 27 rooftop solar projects in Mississauga may generate 4,464 kilowatts (kW) of power – enough power to run 1,700 homes for a year.
• The next application period for Small FIT projects is November 4, 2013 to December 20, 2013.

In other green news, City Council recognized the environmental and financial success of the City’s “Greening Our Fleet” program at last week’s General Committee meeting.

Greening Our Fleet Program – The Facts:

• An environmental success: Reduced greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 193 tonnes annually – equal to taking approximately 39 cars off the roads per year.
• A financial success: Avoided approximately $550,000 in fuel costs cumulatively over the program’s seven years.
• Exceeded the original plan of right-sizing 113 vehicles: Maximized fuel efficiency of 129 vehicles by matching the right type of vehicle for the required use which included the purchase of hybrids and electric vehicles.
On-going green initiatives: Achieving further reductions requires exploring new vehicle technologies, fleet size and expanding the types of vehicles included in the program.
