At Mississauga Council on October 30, 2013, the Mississauga Credit Valley Lions Club and the Applewood Acres Homeowners’ Association presented the City a $25,000 cheque to contribute to a children’s water spray feature that has been installed during the reconstruction of Don McLean Westacres Outdoor Pool.
“The Applewood community is to be congratulated for successfully taking up Mayor McCallion's fundraising challenge and for their contribution to this important community asset." said Ward 1 Councillor Jim Tovey. "It is also important to recognize the work of City staff and the support of Council for bringing the pool redevelopment forward for funding and for the Federal Government’s financial contribution to this project. This project has demonstrated again that by everyone working together our residents will have another great Mississauga facility to serve the community for another half century.”
Don McLean Westacres Outdoor Pool is 47 years old and serves approximately 85,000 residents. Construction will update the pool’s systems to make more efficient use of energy and water and improve accessibility for residents of all ages. Among other improvements, reinvesting in this outdoor pool and building will significantly expand the outdoor pool’s lifespan, and will include updating facility change rooms and washrooms, replacing the pool tank and pool deck, bringing the facility to Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) standards with the addition of two barrier-free parking spaces, and upgrading site services.
Project costs will be funded through the City of Mississauga’s Capital Budget program with support from the Government of Canada’s Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (www.feddevontario.gc.ca).
Construction started in mid-April. The pool was closed for the 2013 season and will reopen for the 2014 outdoor pool season.
