City announces new Directors in Planning and Culture Divisions

Nov 21, 2013

The City of Mississauga has appointed Susan Burt as Director, Strategic Community Initiatives Division and Heather MacDonald as Director, Policy Planning Division, both reporting to the Commissioner of Planning and Building; and Andrew Whittemore as acting Director, Culture Division reporting to the Commissioner of Community Services.

“Both Susan and Heather have had great success in their respective areas and bring tremendous experience and creativity to their new roles. They will be working together to advance our vision as a global, urban city by engaging our community in their work,” said City Manager and Chief Administrative Officer, Janice Baker. “Our strategic vision to shape our innovative global city where people choose to be is in good hands.”

The Strategic Community Initiatives Division will drive and implement the City’s innovative agenda by delivering projects including Inspiration Lakeview, Inspiration Port Credit and the implementation of Downtown 21. Burt will be seconded to this new position for a period of two years. The Policy Planning Division will be restructured to incorporate the areas of Strategic Housing Initiatives and Business Services as well as Policy Planning. MacDonald replaces John Calvert who announced his retirement at the end of this year.

Andrew Whittemore, currently Manager, Cultural Planning, will fill the vacancy created by Burt’s secondment as acting Director, Culture.  He will continue to implement the City’s Culture Master Plan and oversee the Culture and Heritage Planning and Operations sections. “Andrew brings tremendous experience and passion to his work,” said Baker.  “All of these changes build on the strong team we have in place at the City of Mississauga.”

As Canada's sixth largest city, Mississauga is home to 741,000 residents and 55,000 businesses, including 63 Fortune 500 companies with Canadian head offices or major divisional head offices. A diverse, progressive and award-winning municipality located on the shores of Lake Ontario in the heart of the Greater Toronto Area, Mississauga is "Leading Today for Tomorrow" by focusing on delivering services, implementing its Strategic Plan, delivering value for money and maintaining infrastructure.
