Mississauga City Council Announces New City Manager

Mayor Hazel McCallion announced today the appointment of Janice Baker as City Manager for the City of Mississauga.

"I am pleased to announce that Janice Baker has been appointed by Council as City Manager, effective immediately," said Mayor McCallion.

Baker, who has been acting in the role of City Manager since February 2004, joined the City of Mississauga in May 1999, as Commissioner of Corporate Services and Treasurer with responsibility for Human Resources, Legal Services City Clerk, Finance and Information Technology, as well as By-law Enforcement and Communications.

McCallion added: "Janice brings a strong background in municipal governance and fiscal administration from her experience in Newfoundland and central Ontario." Baker served as Director of Finance and City Treasurer for the City of St. John's and Oshawa's Commissioner of Corporate Services and then Commissioner of Public Works.

"It is an honour to serve the residents of Mississauga. I will continue to work with the Mayor and Members of Council, the distinguished members of the senior management team and the very talented City employees in our great City," said Baker.

Baker's varied background includes board membership on the Board of Local Authority Services (LAS), a subsidiary of the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO); is a member of the Executive Board of Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) and is Co-Chair of the GFOA Committee on Canadian Issues and is a member of the Board of Directors of the Trillium Health Centre. In 1997 she served on the Board of the Oshawa YMCA for a two- year term, and in 2002 was the Chair of the Board of the MFOA (Municipal Finance Officers Association).
