City of Mississauga's Car Share Service Drives Toward Success

Apr 16, 2014

Today at General Committee, the Transportation and Works department proposed a two-year renewal with AutoShare Inc. transitioning from a car share pilot project into an ongoing service for the community.

“The car share service is aligned with the City’s initiatives to offer a range of transportation choices, develop a transit-oriented city and implement a parking strategy that supports public transit” said Jacquelyn Hayward Gulati, Manager, Active Transportation. “For people living, working and studying in the downtown, the service provides them with a convenient alternative to traditional automobile ownership.”

The car share pilot project was first introduced in April 2012 to encourage and support residents and City of Mississauga employees to reduce personal vehicle use. Since the start of the pilot project community use has grown, with trips reaching over 1,700.

“Car sharing has been an important investment for the City as it continues to evolve towards a more liveable, accessible and sustainable downtown” said Martin Powell, commissioner, Transportation and Works Department. “Because of the continued growth of the service within Mississauga, AutoShare will be expanding the fleet to include two additional vehicles.”
