Mississauga's City Hall is Among the Most Energy Efficient in Canada

Apr 24, 2014

The Toronto Region and Conservation Authority (TRCA) recently announced that the Mississauga Civic Centre is now among the most energy efficient city halls in Canada.

TRCA reported that the Mississauga Civic Centre has “reached the gold standard target of 20 equivalent kilowatt hours per square foot of energy intensity based on its energy consumption in 2013”. The City of Mississauga, together with other Canadian municipalities, has been participating in TRCA’s Town Hall Challenge 20 by '15 since 2011 to achieve its energy conservation goals.

“This is the direct result of making energy conservation a municipal priority in Mississauga,” said Mayor Hazel McCallion. “I can’t think of a more prominent place to show our environmental commitment and leadership than our own city hall.”

“Reaching this milestone tells us that we’re moving in the right direction and encourages us to pursue innovative, energy-saving opportunities at the Civic Centre," said Raj Sheth, director, Facilities and Property Management. “We’ll be measured again in early 2015 and we expect further energy reductions through high efficiency boilers and LED lighting installations.”

“We’re proud in making the Civic Centre a leader in energy efficiency and for taking action to reduce our environmental footprint,” said Brenda Osborne, director, Environment Division. “Staff support is the foundation to our success. Employees have taken on roles such as green leaders and energy champions, making this a real collaborative effort.”

Background:
The Town Hall Challenge 20 by ’15, the biggest municipal sector energy challenge, is an initiative of the Mayor’s Megawatt Challenge championed by Mayor Hazel McCallion in 2003. It is led by the TRCA through The Living City, a project that helps transform the GTA into one of the most sustainable, livable communities in the world. The final results of the Town Hall Challenge including the most energy efficient city or town halls in Canada will be released in 2015.
