City-wide Fire Safety Education Program Launches this Week with a New Sponsor

May 07, 2014

Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services (MFES) is launching its annual Home Safe Home program, a city-wide education and awareness program that teaches residents about fire prevention and safety. From May to September, fire crews go door-to-door distributing fire safety materials, inspecting smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. Fire crews also speak with residents about keeping their homes and communities fire safe.

“Hundreds of house fires occur in Mississauga every year. Many of these fires are preventable,” said Al Hills, Platoon Chief and member of the Home Safe Home committee. “Fire safety is everyone’s responsibility. MFES is committed to advancing public education programs such as Home Safe Home in an effort to reduce the number of residential fires.”

According to Hills, Home Safe Home reached more than 32,000 Mississauga homes last year alone. This year, Birnie CurrentSAFE, a Mississauga-based, family-owned electrical contractor signed on to become the program’s first corporate sponsor.

“We’re proud to partner with MFES on the Home Safe Home program and assist with their mission to save lives and prevent catastrophic losses,” said Tim Birnie, President, Birnie CurrentSAFE. “This partnership is a natural extension of our corporate commitment to make people’s homes safer, both through education and in-home testing.”

Over the next three years, the sponsorship will help expand the program’s public outreach increasing the number of home visits, the distribution of fire safety materials and community events.
