Mississauga Delays Opening Eight Soccer Field Sites Due to Extreme Winter Weather Damage

May 13, 2014

The City of Mississauga has delayed opening eight soccer field sites for an estimated 12 weeks due to damage caused by the extremely harsh and cold winter.

“Soccer fields, like lawns and grass areas, routinely take time to recover from the impact of winter,” said Laura Piette, director, Parks & Forestry.  “The December ice storm, record low temperatures, heavy snow and freeze and thaw conditions caused more than expected damage in eight City soccer field locations.  These locations will need more work and time to return to field use conditions.”

The eight soccer fields not available for play:
Crawford Green #2 field
John “Bud” Cleary
Zonta Meadows
Brickyard Park
Dr. Martin L. Dobkin
Fallingbrook Community lit field
Meadowvale Sports Park North
Mississauga Valley

In April, Parks staff began work to repair winter damage by sweeping and raking to remove dead grass, fertilizing and over seeding fields.   Now that reseeding is done, it will take approximately 12 weeks for turf to be ready for play depending on weather conditions.

Piette added, “We ask residents to please not play or walk on soccer fields in the eight restricted locations to allow time for fields to recover.”

“In the meantime, the City is working with community soccer organizations to relocate games to other fields wherever possible,” added Howie Dayton, director, Recreation.
