Mississauga's One Million Trees Program Plants More Than 100,000 Trees

Jun 18, 2014

The City’s One Million Trees program has reached more than 100,000 trees planted, exceeding the program goals. Launched last spring, One Million Trees has helped to conserve and enhance the City’s open spaces and forested areas for future generations to enjoy.

“Trees are important to the environment, health and quality of life in our city,” said Gavin Longmuir, Manager Forestry. “The tremendous success of our tree planting program shows that our residents and community partners are committed to preserving, protecting and improving our urban forest. This is especially important since Mississauga’s tree canopy has recently been hit hard by the ice storm and pests.”

Longmuir said each year, the Parks & Forestry Division plants new trees and shrubs on streets, in parks and natural areas to ensure a green future for Mississauga. “One Million Trees builds on that success,” he said.

The City is working with residents, schools and businesses across Mississauga to reach the program’s ultimate goal of planting one million trees in 20 years as set out in the City’s “Living Green” pillar of its Strategic Plan. Program partners helped to educate and engage the public as well. Partners Credit Valley Conservation, Toronto Region and Conservation Authority, Evergreen and Credit River Angler’s Association have helped the City reach 100,000 trees planted.
