New Committee set to review Animal Care and Control Bylaw

A new committee, Animal Standards of Care, is set to review the Animal Care and Control Bylaw on the standards of care for keeping and housing animals.

“The role of this committee is to review the proposed Animal Care and Control bylaw to ensure that it meets the best interests of the community and animals,” said Ward 9 Councillor Pat Saito and Animal Standards of Care Ad Hoc Committee Chair.  “Humane treatment of animals is important to Council and the residents of Mississauga and by working together with community representatives, we can put in place a bylaw that is supported by all parties.” 

“Humane treatment of animals is important to our community and our work on this committee will bring that perspective forward,” said Ward 7 Councillor Iannicca and Animal Standards of Care Ad Hoc Committee member.

“This important committee will help us review the bylaw and set humane standards of care for animals,” said Ward 11 Councillor George Carlson and Animal Standards of Care Ad Hoc Committee member. 

Mandate

The committee includes Councillor Pat Saito, Ward 9 (Chair), Councillor Nando Iannicca, Ward 7 and Councillor George Carlson, Ward 11; two residents; one representative from the Mississauga Humane Society; representatives from Mississauga Animal Services and Enforcement, and representatives from the veterinary and animal welfare communities as required.

The committee will review the following.

• leaving animals outside 24/7 and during extreme weather;
• tethering dogs;
• pet housing for animals left outside;
• enclosure/pen size;
• transporting animals in vehicles;
• leaving animals in motor vehicles; and,
• setbacks for animal enclosures.

The committee will report to Council with recommendations on the standards of care for the keeping and housing of animals. The term of office for the new committee will end when the report on changes to the Animal Care and Control Bylaw is submitted.
