Methadone Licensing By-law in effect

Jul 02, 2014

This week, Council approved, a bylaw to license and regulate methadone clinics and methadone pharmacies in Mississauga.

Methadone clinics and pharmacies deliver methadone maintenance treatment to help treat opiod dependence in the community. The bylaw complements rules and regulations already in place in Ontario to help address potential concerns at the local municipal level such as safety, nuisances and cleanliness.

Background
Methadone clinics and pharmacies are currently regulated by federal legislation, the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (the “CPSO”) and the Ontario College of Pharmacists (the “OCP”.) The City’s Methadone Licensing By-law will complement the rules and regulations currently in place for physicians and pharmacists. The bylaw will allow the licence manager to refuse, revoke or suspend a licence if the applicant or licensee has not complied with any requirement set out by the CPSO and/or OCP or any City bylaw.
