Mississauga Opens Winter-Damaged Soccer Fields Earlier Than Expected

Jul 09, 2014

The City of Mississauga’s eight soccer fields have recovered earlier than expected from harsh winter damage and will be open for play starting July 14, 2014.

In April, Parks staff began work to repair winter damage by sweeping and raking to remove dead grass, fertilizing and over seeding fields.  In May, the City expected it to take 12 weeks for turf to be ready for play. Due to favourable weather conditions, the fields are now open four weeks sooner than expected.

“The ideal growing weather this spring has helped the grass seeds germinate and grow more quickly,” said Laura Piette, director, Parks & Forestry Division. “In addition to great weather, our Parks staff have done an excellent job in caring for the fields, are now lining them and setting the goals to make them ready for play.”

The eight soccer fields now reopened for play:
Crawford Green #2 field
John “Bud” Cleary Park
Zonta Meadows
Brickyard Park
Dr. Martin L. Dobkin Park
Fallingbrook Community Park lit field
Meadowvale North Sports Park
Mississauga Valley

Paul Gilbert Football Field at Mississauga Valley Park also damaged by winter weather will open on July 18, 2014.  For status information and updates on all City sport fields throughout the season, check the website at mississauga.ca/sportparks.

“We thank our sport field users, community sport organizations and residents for their patience and co-operation while the soccer fields were offline during this time,” added Howie Dayton, director, Recreation Division.
