Mississauga Recognized for Excellence in Social Planning

Sep 10, 2014

Today, City Council congratulated City staff who received the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP) Social Planning Award for Planning Excellence in Fredericton, New Brunswick this summer. The award recognizes Mississauga’s work on its Second Units program.  Second units are also known as in-law suites and basement apartments.

"Having a safe, affordable place to live is extremely important for health and well-being.  It is an essential building block for a healthy, sustainable community,” said Ed Sajecki, Mississauga’s commissioner of Planning & Building.  “Mississauga is working hard to provide the housing choices people need so everyone feels they belong.”

Mississauga’s Second Units program came into effect on January 2, 2014 after two years of research, public consultation and City Council approvals.  The program is the first phase of Housing Choices: Mississauga’s Affordable Housing Strategy and Action Plan.

Background

The Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP) works on behalf of the more than 7,500 planning professionals nation-wide, serving as the voice of Canada’s planning community. Since its beginning in 1919, CIP has grown into a federated national organization with provincial and territorial institutes and associations across Canada, and with links to planning associations worldwide.

The CIP’s Awards for Planning Excellence honour planning projects annually for excellence, innovation, impact on the profession, implementation potential and overall presentation. Awards are presented at the institute’s annual national conference. For more information, visit: http://cip-icu.ca/#
