Recruitment Process for Citizen Committee Appointments Updated

Today, City Council approved a new process to help improve recruiting for citizen appointments to City committees. Staff recommended improvements after a review of best practices of other municipalities and provincial governments.
 
The Citizen Appointment Committee is responsible for choosing citizens to serve on City committees.  The committee includes members of Council.

Using the new recruitment process, City staff will assist the appointment committee by:

• Improving the application form
• Screening candidates
• Standardizing interview questions and
• Gathering recommendations for Council’s review and approval.

The new process will help to ensure that the committee interviews the best candidates. It also ensures that all Council members are involved in approving appointments. 

Background

The City of Mississauga has 15 committees that include citizen members.  City committees include boards, authorities and quasi-judicial committees. Examples include: the Committee of Adjustment, the Mississauga Appeal Tribunal and the Election Finance Review Committee. 

There are also advisory committees.  Examples include: the Traffic Safety Council, the Museums of Mississauga Advisory Committee and the Accessibility Advisory Committee.

The new process will be used for the 2014-18 term. The City will post opportunities for new appointees starting in November 2014.
