In an announcement made this weekend, the City of Mississauga was named one of Greater Toronto's Top 90 employers for 2010. Winners were selected from more than 2, 600 applicants to the national Canada's Top 100 Employers competition.
"We are proud to be listed as a top employer in the Greater Toronto region," said Janice Baker, City Manager and CAO. "We have worked hard to be an employer of choice and to provide our employees with a flexible workplace that is progressive and meets the needs of today's employees."
Editors of Mediacorp Canada Inc., the publishing firm that manages Canada's Top 100 Employers, have confirmed that, among other practices, the City of Mississauga:
- helps older employees transition to retirement with phased-in retirement work options and retirement planning assistance
- supports employees who are new mothers with maternity leave top-up benefits (to 95% of salary for 6 weeks)
- manages a variety of alternative work options, including flexible hours, reduced summer hours and a formal earned days-off program.
Employers were evaluated using eight main criteria: Physical Workplace; Work Atmosphere & Social; Health, Financial & Family Benefits; Vacation & Time Off; Employee Communications; Performance Management; Training & Skills Development; and Community Involvement. Employers are compared to other organizations in their field to determine which offers the most progressive and forward-thinking programs.
